Black Gums, Butterflies and More at our Annual General Meeting: 11 August 2024.

The community is invited to attend Woodend Landcare’s Annual General Meeting at 10am on Sunday 11 August for a talk by the Threatened Species Conservancy on saving Woodend’s Black Gums, endangered butterflies and more.

Congrats to our Local Landcare Legends

Huge congratulations to our local Landcare legends were honored at the recent Landcare awards – our own Nicole Middleton, Newham Landcare’s Penny Roberts and Malmsbury Landcare’s John Walter were all commended for the Joan Kirner Landcare Award. Highly deserved accolades for all.

Woodend Landcare also congrats Marie Jones from Connecting Country in our neighboring Mount Alexander Shire who was named as the winner of the Joan Kirner Landcare Award.

Updated working bee calendar

After our short winter break, you can be a local Landcare legend too by coming along to our Working Bee on Sunday 25 August. See the updated calendar below for all our important dates for the next twelve months.

Donate to Woodend Landcare: Help us enhance our local environment

Woodend Landcare is a not-for-profit, environmental community group run by a team of dedicated volunteers. We aim to enhance the natural environment within and around Woodend through, improving biodiversity corridors, restoring waterways, and protecting endangered species, all-the-while increasing the liveability of our town.

We are always happy to accept inexperienced newcomers at our working bees, new members into our group and financial donations from individuals, businesses or other groups who are unable to donate their time to help our cause.

There are numerous ways donations can made to Woodend Landcare:

1. Tax Deductible Donations via Landcare Victoria Fund

Go to Make a gift for nature today. Enter “Woodend Landcare” when asked which group you wish to support.

2. Non-tax Deductible Donations

Cheque donations via the post (Cheques payable to: Woodend Landcare Inc; P.O. Box 297, Woodend, VIC 3442)
Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) or online bank transfer (Contact woodendlandcare@gmail.com for our bank details)

3. Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)

Donate the money raised from recycling your 10c cans and bottles at a Visy CDS drop-off site. Simply download the CDS Vic North app to your mobile, and on the Donations tab, select Woodend Landcare. Our Woodend Landcare Zone ID: C2000016665 or show our barcode (see picture) and your donation will come through to us.

4. Ritchies IGA Community Benefits Program

When Ritchies IGA members nominate Woodend Landcare as the organisation they support, IGA will donate a proportion of their shopping total to Woodend Landcare, at no charge to the shopper.

5. Bequest

Banksia Planting this Sunday

Join Woodend Landcare for a planting day with a difference to finish our Pollinator Corridor Project. This Sunday 16 June (starting 9am), we aim to plant 165 banksia and monocot seedlings along Five Mile Creek starting from Jo’s Bridge, between Bowen and Wood Sts.

We’ll split up into teams (each with a wheelbarrow of seedlings and equipment), and wander along the creek, planting as we go.

Pollinator Seedling Working Bee – 26 May

Woodend Landcare have received our third and final delivery of seedlings and cardboard plant guards for the Pollinator Corridor Project. Run by Upper Campaspe Landcare Network (UCLN), this project aims to bolster understorey and ground cover plants along riparian biolinks such as Five Mile Creek. When complete, we will have planted approximately 700 indigenous understorey seedings along Five Mile Creek as part of this project.

Locally native shrubs, herbs and grasses provide important food and shelter for small birds and insects, which are the main pollinators in natural ecosystems.

To enable all these seedlings to be planted before winter, we have scheduled an extra working bee on the Sunday 26 May. This gives us two more bee’s before we take a break for winter. Woodend Landcare was thrilled by the turn out to last Sunday’s Black Gum Slatey Creek Reserve Working Bee. Twenty-two (19 adults, 3 children) fabulous volunteers helped with a huge amount of woody weed and rubbish removal. We also planted about 35 plants as part of our Pollinator Corridors Project. A huge thanks to all that showed up to lend a hand – having new faces coming regularly to our working bees means a lot to our committee. Special thanks to our amazing catering team – Kate and Chris for the tasty morning tea.
